July 12, 1932 to March 10, 2025
Kathy E. Warren was born in Elyria, Ohio during the Great Depression to Ferdinand and Theo Eckman Warren. After Kathy’s birth, Ferd joined the Leipsic, Ohio law practice of Harold Weaver, whose wife, Helen, had been Theo’s close friend at Hiram College.
When Kathy was a baby, Ferd defended Leipsic gangster Fred Pierpont against charges that he participated in John Dillinger’s 1933 break from a nearby Lima jail (Fred had an alibi). The Pierpont family paid their legal bill by giving Ferd a getaway car. The Warren family, including Kathy’s younger siblings Bill Warren and the future Ann Warren Wheat, drove around Leipsic for years in that bullet-riddled sedan.
Kathy’s other childhood memories included making hollyhock dolls in the garden, playing in nearby corn and wheat fields, and singing songs at the piano together after dinner before the family had a tv. The Warrens were active in Leipsic’s First Christian Church.
After graduating from Leipsic High School in 1950, Kathy obtained an English degree from Ohio Wesleyan University followed by graduate work at Ohio State University. Kathy taught grade school for decades in Columbus, Ohio; San Diego, CA (where she met JFK while he was campaigning for U.S. President), New York City, and Chicago. Her apartment in Oak Park, Illinois contained a murphy bed, prompting one nephew to marvel at her ability to sleep standing up.
In a life-changing job, Kathy taught the children of U.S. soldiers stationed in Tours, France which she enjoyed immensely and created her life-long love for French wine, food, and skiing. Kathy loved playing the piano, writing poetry and mystery novels, her cats and dogs, as well as classical, pop, and church music. She adored Agatha Christie mysteries and classic films, especially “It Happened on 5th Avenue.” Until her last days, she enjoyed sending updated lists of her favorite cities and films to family and friends.
After retiring from teaching, Kathy moved back into the family’s Victorian home on Leipsic’s Main Street. She later entered The Meadows retirement community with her close friends Dick and Jane Brandt.
Kathy’s parents and siblings preceded her in death. She is survived by two nieces and two nephews. A private, graveside service will be held at a future date (respecting her wish that “Amazing Grace” not be sung there and that “Edelweiss” will be). In Kathy’s memory, consider a gift to Camp Christian in Magnetic Springs, Ohio (https://www.ccinoh.com/donation.aspx).
Kathy enjoyed having the last word. During a snowfall days before she died, the 92-year-old wrote the following poem, “Tranquility,” while smoking on Jane Brandt’s front porch. We share her last poem here:
Rimmed by snow-covered woodlands.
A gift of stillness with winter registering its ardent signature.
Moments given to tranquil, comforting silence.
Arrangements are under the direction of LOVE-HEITMEYER FUNERAL HOME, Leipsic.
In Kathy’s memory, consider a gift to Camp Christian in Magnetic Springs, 10335 Maple Dell Road, Marysville, Ohio 43030. Condolences may be expressed at www.lovefuneralhome.com
