OG graduate hired at S.I.U.

Ottawa-Glandorf graduate Dr. Michelle (Sdao) Freeman was hired this fall at Southern Illinois University. She has completed her graduate studies at UNC Chapel Hill and has received her PHD in Religious Studies. Michelle is the daughter of Mike and Cathy Sdao.

As apples fall to the ground, barbeque grills are fired up at tailgates, and pumpkins don front porches – one insect gets blamed for another insect’s pesky behavior. This article clarifies misconceptions about the insects often referred to as “bees” that invade our outdoor spaces this time of year. These “bees” aren’t bees at all, but rather yellowjacket wasps. True honey bees and yellowjacket wasps are both beneficial insects, but the latter can be exponentially more bothersome.

Short Corn Varieties

Harvest has started and farmers were making considerable progress until the recent rains. Most farmers welcomed the rain since we have been in a major drought. For most corn and soybeans crops, the rain is probably too late but it may help on late or double crop soybeans (planted after wheat) and for new wheat or cover crops being planted this fall. Of course; fruit trees, lawns and other vegetation needed the rain.
