CONTINENTAL Barbara J. Potts, 78, of Continental, died at 11:10 a.m. on Sunday, May 4, 2025, at Mercy Health St. Rita’s Medical Center, Lima surrounded by her loving family. She was born June 21, 1946, in Lima to the late Virgil and Virginia (Schnapp) Unverferth. On August 26, 1967, she married her husband of 58 years, Dennis Potts. He survives in Continental.
Other survivors include seven children: Dennis (Tracy) Potts II of Continental, Stephanie (Jeff) Grant of Dayton, Brian Potts of Dayton, Amy (Jon) Frueh of Elida, Brad (Katy) Potts of Kalida, Jeff (Jackie) Potts of Cincinnati and Erin (Bo) Donora of Baldwin City, KS; 21 grandchildren; and five siblings: Virgil “Rick” Unverferth, Randy (Barb) Unverferth, Roger (Lisa) Unverferth, Debara (John) McIntyre and Rod (Tricia) Unverferth.
In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by a son, Christopher Potts; a daughter-in-law, Jacqueline Potts; and a sister-in-law, Mary Kay Unverferth.
Barbara was a nurse for the better part of 50 years. She graduated from St. Rita’s School of Nursing in 1967. Barbara was a selfless person, always putting the needs of others before her own. She held a quiet, steady wisdom that touched every part of lifeyou could count on her for anything, whether demonstrating perfect handwriting, knowing every medical term, or somehow getting even the worst stains out of your favorite shirt. Barbara never knew a stranger and loved to share about her children and grandchildren. She spoiled her grandchildren with her love of ice cream and never missed one of their events. Being a mom and a grandmother brought her the most joy. Barbara was a member of Saint John the Baptist Catholic Church, Continental.
Funeral Mass will begin at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, May 8, 2025, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Continental with Fr. Phil Smith officiating. Burial will follow in Monroe Cemetery, Continental. Visitation will be held from 2 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday at HEITMEYER FUNERAL HOME, Continental and 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. on Thursday prior to the mass at the church.
