CLOVERDALE – Betty Jean Otto passed away February 21, 2025, after a yearlong battle with cancer.
Betty was born July 21, 1947, in Paulding to the late Richard and Helen (Williams) Downing. On September 28, 1968, she married Thomas “Tony” Otto, he preceded her in death on August 31, 2019.
She is survived by a daughter: Michelle (Steven) Hellman, of Delphos; and a son: Jim (Jackie) Otto, of Fredericksburg VA.; five grandchildren: Ashley (Tyler) Otto, Aaron (Kelsey) Hellman, Allison Otto, Jacob (Maddy) Hellman, and Timothy Otto; and a great-granddaughter: Josie Hellman. Betty is also survived by her amazing sisters: Carol Ladd of Cloverdale and Patty Peterson of Vanlue; in-laws: Rick (Mel) Otto of Park City, UT, Steve (Geri) Otto of Ottawa, Sue Flood of Charlotte, NC and Rhonda Downing of Oakwood; and many nieces and nephews.
Betty is also preceded in death by a brother, Richard “Buck” Downing and in-laws: Bob Ladd, Jerry Peterson, and Bill Flood.
Betty worked at Zellers Corporation, Defiance until her retirement. After retirement, she enjoyed fishing, volunteering, bingo, gardening and quilting. She was a member of the Cloverdale Garden Club. Betty created beautiful arrangements that she showed at the Putnam County Fair, winning many blue ribbons. She volunteered at the Ottawa Senior Citizens Center, creating many friends. She played bingo and sewed hundreds of lap robes that were shared with local hospices to present to their patients. Many of her lap robes were military in theme, these were distributed to local veterans and through the Dayton VA. She and Tony volunteered countless hours at the Meadows of Kalida. She was recognized in 2022 as an Outstanding Senior Citizen, by the Putnam County Council on Aging.
A visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. on Thursday, February 27, 2025, at LOVE-HEITMEYER FUNERAL HOME, Jackson Township. A private burial will follow at Cascade Cemetery, Cloverdale.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the Ottawa Senior Citizens Center.
