Carl Francis Meyer

UPPER ARLINGTON – Carl Francis Meyer passed away in the early morning hours of February 13, 2025, at an assisted living facility in Upper Arlington, Ohio. He was born March 4, 1930, in Ottawa, Putnam County, Ohio, to the late Cleanora Elizabeth Meyer, née Siebeneck, and Oscar Bernard Meyer, both natives of Putnam County. Growing up on the family farm, these formative years instilled in him a deep connection to agriculture, which would later shape his career. After graduating from Ottawa Sts. Peter and Paul High School in 1948, Carl married Ida Naomi Wheaton on November 20, 1948. Ida preceded him in death on December 20, 2020. After serving in the US Army during the Korean conflict, rising to the rank of Sergeant, Carl attended the University of Toledo on the GI Bill, earning a bachelor’s degree in business administration through night classes. He spent most of his career as a grain merchandiser, introducing broker for agricultural commodity futures trading, and later, a wholesale dealer in bird seed components. Carl was named a Kentucky Colonel for his contributions to Kentucky agribusiness and was also active in the Ohio Agribusiness Association. Until a fall at his home in June 2024, he enjoyed feeding the birds and other wildlife in his backyard and attending Sunday mass at St. Andrew’s Church in Upper Arlington. Known for his friendly and genial nature, Carl readily shared his financial and agricultural advice. Following Ida’s death, he became an avid card player at the Upper Arlington Senior Center, where he enjoyed bridge, euchre, and 500, and his skill at these games was well-known. His penchant for winning “Nullo” hands in 500 led his friends to rename the bid “Meyer.” He was very proud of what he and Ida had achieved in their married life, with their family, and in his business, where Ida and his granddaughter, Elizabeth, were integral to its success.
Carl is survived by his children, Susan Fillmore and Charles Meyer; his daughter-in-law, Monika Voigt Meyer; his sister, Lorene Jettinghoff; and his grandchildren, Elizabeth Fillmore, Rus (“Crafty”) Fillmore, Kathryn Meyer (Caitlin Graves), and Laura Meyer; as well as his brother-in-law, Gary Elsass. In addition to his parents and his wife, Ida, he was predeceased by his sister and brother-in-law, Doris and Earl Gerdeman; his sister, Marilyn Elsass; and his granddaughter, Emily Meyer. He is also survived by many dear friends, including Karen Lanning, Ben Yokohama, Marylou Zschach, Roger Thurman, and Shane Congrove, as well as numerous other relatives and neighbors who will miss him dearly.
A funeral Mass will be held at St. Andrew’s Church in Upper Arlington, Ohio, on Thursday, February 27, 2025, at 10:30 AM, with visitation beginning at 9:30 AM. The family will also receive friends at the Love Funeral Home, 405 E. Third St., Ottawa, Ohio, on Friday, February 28, 2025, from 9:30-11:30 AM. Interment will follow at Noon at Harman Cemetery, Old State Route 224, Gilboa, Putnam County, Ohio, with military rites by the Ottawa American Legion, VFW, AMVETS and DAV, where he will be laid to rest next to Ida.
