Alvin “AJ” Unverferth, 87 of Glandorf, passed away on Monday, December 23, 2024, at his residence. He was born December 17, 1937, in Sugar Creek Township, Gomer, Ohio, to the late Oscar and Bernadette (Heitmeyer) Unverferth. On July 18, 1959, he married Ruth A. Lauf, who survives in Glandorf.
AJ is also survived by three children: Roger (Lynn Malone) Unverferth of Ottawa, Dave (Tammy) Unverferth of Van Buren, and Alvin “Ace” (Amy) Unverferth Jr. of Glandorf; thirteen grandchildren: John Unverferth, Nicole (Derrick) Butcher, Brandon Unverferth, Kaylee Unverferth, Ray (Lauren) Unverferth, Evan Unverferth, Ashley (Todd) Sigler, Adam (Melissa) Unverferth, Corey Unverferth, Courtney Unverferth, Jenny (Rick) Delzeith, Petey (Tonjia) VanLoo, Dylan (Shannon) VanLoo; eleven great-grandchildren: Jordyn, Elijah, Thatcher, and Rachel Unverferth, Peyton, Rori, and Axle Butcher, Ella and Easton Sigler, Blakely, and Larson Unverferth; a sister: Vera Jean Stechschulte of Glandorf; and a brother-in-law: Jerry Trame of Ottawa.
He is preceded in death by a son, Denny Unverferth; a daughter, Cindy VanLoo; a brother, Paul (Naomi) Heitmeyer; a sister, JoAnn Trame; and a brother-in-law, Dan Stechschulte.
AJ was a truck driver for Wenham Transportation and DOT Lines, where he retired after 35 years. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He was a member of the Teamsters Local 908, VFW Post 9142, Ottawa, American Legion Post 63, Ottawa, Fraternal Order of Eagles Post 2234, Ottawa, and St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Glandorf. AJ was an avid race fan. He enjoyed visiting with neighbors, friends, and family in his shed.
Funeral Mass will begin at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, December 28, 2024, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Glandorf with Fr. Matt Keller officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery, with military rites by Ottawa American Legion, VFW, and AM Vets. A visitation will be held on Friday from 2 to 8 p.m. and again on Saturday from 9:15 to 10:15 a.m. at LOVE FUNERAL HOME, Ottawa.
