April is National Reentry Month — a time each year where we focus on the need to support those who are returning home after an incarceration experience. Putnam county Commissioners have signed a proclamation recognizing April as National Second Change Month in Putnam County. Every year, the Putnam County Reentry Coalition shares the statistics that demonstrate that the need for support is great. Every year, they highlight events and opportunities to learn more. But, engaging with, and caring for those who are returning home is a 24/7 experience. We walk with returning neighbors as they find places to live, put clothes on their backs, receive care for physical and mental health, and connect with their home communities. We assist with obtaining driver’s licenses, birth certificates, and Social Security cards they might reestablish their true identities. We encourage continuing education and pursuing gainful employment. We offer them a listening ear when grief and frustration need to be expressed. More importantly, we celebrate with our returning neighbors when milestones are reached as they engage with society once again. (Photo submitted)
