Columbus Grove continues to discuss downtown safety

COLUMBUS GROVE — The question of whether to make the alley next to the village’s city hall a oneway (from East Sycamore Street to East Cross Street) has been oft touched upon at CG council meetings in recent weeks, and the most recent council meeting began with push-back against the idea from a nearby business owner. Erick Collar, owner of Bazaarguitar, explained to council how this change to the alley would negatively impact his business.

Assistant prosecutor requests compensation for serving in the capacity of two full-time prosecutors

OTTAWA — A few weeks ago, Assistant Prosecutor Nicole Smith met with Putnam County Commissioners John Schlumbohm and Vincent Schroeder to discuss her request for a $25,000 onetime bonus from the county’s general fund. Smith made her case for receiving the compensation from the county’s general fund with verbal testimony and documented evidence.

Joan Giesige

KALIDA Joan Giesige, 81, of Kalida, passed away on Monday, September 16, 2024, at her residence. She was born February 14, 1943, in Lima to the late Bertram “Jim” and Laura (Duling) Wortkoetter. On October 2, 1965, she married Edward B. “Edd” Giesige, who preceded her in death on March 10, 2013. Joan is survived by two children: Greg (Michelle) Giesige of Ottoville and Jill (Brian Schmersal) Miehls of Kalida; two grandchildren: Eyon Miehls and Mya Miehls; and three brothers: Robert “Bob” Wortkoetter, Thomas “Tom” Wortkoetter and Anthony “Tony” (Jill) Wortkoetter. She was also preceded in death by a brother, William “Bill” Wortkoetter; and two sisters: Janet (Larry) Aelker and Jane (Wayne) Patrick. Joan retired from Putnam Acres Care Center, where she worked in housekeeping. She was a devoted member of St. Michael Catholic Church, Kalida, its Altar Rosary Society, C. L. of C. and part of the prayer line in Kalida. She enjoyed gardening, working around the house, getting together with friends and former co-workers, and doing puzzles with her grandchildren. Joan loved spending time with her family, especially attending her grandchildren’s sporting events. Funeral Mass will begin 10:30 a.m. on Friday, September 20, 2024 at St. Michael Catholic Church, Kalida with Fr. Phil Smith officiating. Burial will be at a later date in the church cemetery. Visitation will be held from 2 to 8 p.m. on Thursday and 9 to 10 a.m. on Friday at LOVE FUNERAL HOME, Ottawa. A rosary service will begin at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday at the funeral home.
