Titans open ACME sectional win with win

COLUMBUS GROVE — Ottawa pitcher Austin Verhoff tossed a three hitter Friday evening as the Titans downed Columbus Grove 6-2 in the opening game of the Putnam County ACME sectional tournament.
The win advances the Titans (4-7) to a Sunday contest against the winner of the Saturday game between Miller City and Kalida at 1 p.m. Columbus Grove drops into the losers brackets where they will face the Miller City-Kalida loser at 12:30 p.m.
Verhoff worked six innings for the Titans allowing two runs on three hits with six strikeouts and he walked five batters. Chandler Kersh worked a scoreless seventh inning walking two batters and striking out three.
O-G grabbed the lead in the top of the first inning as they scored three times.
Verhoff opened the game working a walk before Noah Recker collected a one out single that gave O-G a 1-0 lead as Verhoff scored from second base after advancing on a steal. Ben Deitering made it 2-0 with a double off the left field wall and he stole third base. After Austin Williams walked a wild pitch made it 3-0.
Columbus Grove scored a run in the bottom of the first inning as Reid Stechschulte and Ryan Verhoff walked to start the game before Elisha Jones loaded the bases with an infield single. A groundout to second base scored the run. The Bulldogs reloaded the bases as Marcos Olivo was hit by a pitch. A strikeout and bounce out ended the inning.
The Titans added a run in the third inning as Deitering smacked his second RBI double of the game scoring Recker, who had singled.
Columbus Grove came back with a run in the bottom of the inning as Kyle Welty was hit-by-a-pitch with the bases loaded to force in Jones, who had walked.
O-G added a run in the fifth inning as Deitering picked up his third RBI of the game with a single down the left field line that scored Recker who had doubled. Williams had an RBI single in the seventh inning that scored Deitering who had reached base for the fourth time in the game.
Jones took the loss for Columbus Grove as he went five innings. Stechschulte worked the final two innings.
Miller City 7
LEIPSIC — Miller City opened ACME sectional action with a 7-0 win over Leipsic Friday evening.
The Wildcats advance to face Kalida Saturday at noon at Miller City. The winner advances to face Ottawa-Glandorf on Sunday.
