KALIDA — Columbus Grove jumped out to an early lead Friday night as the Bulldogs beat Kalida 6-1 in Putnam County League action.
The Bulldogs scored three times in the top of the first inning on a two run triple by Josh Verhoff to right field and he scored on a passed ball.
Columbus Grove added two runs in the third inning as Jake Utendorf plated a run on groundout and Tanner Neu had a sacrifice fly. The Bulldogs made it 6-0 in the sixth inning as Logan Diller scored on an error.
Kalida avoided the shutout with a run in the bottom of the sixth as Trevor Maag scored on a bases loaded walk to Jeffrey Knueve. Two strikeouts and a pickoff play prevented the Wildcats from cutting farther into the Bulldog lead.
Verhoff picked up the win for Grove as he went four innings allowing no runs on one hit with eight strikeouts and two walks. Riley Brubaker worked three innings in relief allowing a run on two hits with six strikeouts.
Verhoff had three of the Bulldogs six hits in the game.
Austin Swift took the loss for Kalida as he worked 2 2/3 innings allowing five runs on three hits with four walks and four strikeouts. Colton Farrell finished the game.
Brady Laudick had two hits for Kalida (4-9).
