Charles "Charlie" Leroy Mattern

LEIPSIC -- Charles "Charlie" Leroy Mattern of Leipsic passed away Thursday, Dec. 12, 2013 at The Meadows of Leipsic. He was born July 25, 1927 in Fredericksburg, OH to the late Reverend Asa C and Mary (Miller) Mattern.
Upon moving to Leipsic he met and married the love of his life Margaret Peoples on Dec. 6, 1952, she continues to reside in Leipsic.
Charlie graduated from Fredericksburg High School where he played basketball, baseball, and was in the band, he then enlisted into the Navy to serve our country during WWII. Once discharged from service he attended Bowling Green State University and belonged to the Phi Kappa Psi fraternity and was involved in their choral group. He was an accountant for Parker Chevrolet formerly of Leipsic and a salesman for Wayne Feed. He then owned and operated Mattern-Montooth Insurance serving as an Independent Insurance Agent along with Mattern Realty. Charlie was also one of the founders of the former Red Carpet Realty Group. He was a faithful member of the First Christian Church serving as a Deacon, Elder, and on their Board. He was a Lifetime member of Leipsic Chamber of Commerce, Leipsic Eagles, and the Leipsic Fishing and Hunters Club. He was also a member of the Leipsic VFW, Leipsic American Legion, Free and Accepted Masons, and former Leipsic Kiwanis. Charlie had a keen sense of belonging to his community and helping it grow. He was an avid golfer and looked forward to his yearly Canadian fishing and Pennsylvania deer hunting trips with his friends. Charlie was a great story teller and loved visiting with everyone especially his family and friends.
He is survived by his three daughters and son-in-laws, Beth and Kevin Lammon and Christine and Nathan Christman of Leipsic, and Laura and Brad Hibbard of Whitehouse, OH. His grandchildren Megan Lammon, Jacie and Tim Eding, Brittany Lammon, Heather Christman, Allison Christman, Maximilian Christman, Alec Sills along with Great grandchildren Jake and Luke Eding loved spending time with him. Also surviving is his brother, Jerry (RuLea) Mattern of Cadillac MI, sister-in-laws Agnes Mattern of Leipsic, Louise Mattern of Springfield, OH, and brother-in-law Herbert Johnson of Kokomo, IN.
He was preceded in death by his sister, Rutheada Johnson and three brothers, John, Chalmers, and Paul.
A memorial service will be held on Sunday Dec. 22, 2013 at the First Christian Church in Leipsic at 2 p.m. with the Reverend Timothy Eding officiating. Visitation will be held at 1pm prior to the service.
Memorial gifts may be given to the First Christian Church or the Alzheimer Association.
