OTTAWA — The United Way of Putnam County will kick off its 2014 fundraising campaign with an Appetizer Extravaganza and the 1st Annual Putnam County Wing Championship. This event officially marks the beginning of United Way’s 2014 fundraising efforts. The Kick-off will be held Thursday, Sept. 11, at The Schroeder Center for the Arts, 162 W. Main Street, Ottawa, and the public is invited. Attendees will each receive a wing voting ballot, one drink ticket and a variety of appetizers throughout the evening.

The wing competition, open to Putnam County restaurants only, will feature chicken wings served up by Henry’s Restaurant, Millie’s Café, Red Pig Inn, Smoke E’s Bar and Grill, and The Schnipke Inn. Prizes will be awarded in two divisions. The “2014 Putnam County Wing Champion” will selected by a panel of five designated “blind” judges and the “People’s Choice Wing Award” will be named by ballot vote. Wing sampling and judging will begin at 7 p.m. and prizes will be awarded at 8 p.m.

Following the wing competition, the 2014 United Way Campaign Chairman, Mike Schumaker, will announce the 2014 fundraising goal and campaign theme and announce the results of the Pacesetter campaigns already held or currently underway. The 2014 Pacesetter companies include Fortman Insurance Services, Palpac Industries Inc., First Federal Bank, FLR Insurance, and Crime Victim Services. Schumaker, Community Banking Center Manager at the First Federal Bank of Ottawa, is in his second year of chairing the United Way campaign.

Tickets for the Kick-Off are $10 each and are available from United Way board members and by calling the United Way of Putnam County at 419-523-4505.
