COLUMBUS GROVE — Big Earl will be returning this year to the Columbus Grove American Legion Post 516/S.A.L. fishing derby on Sunday, May 18, at the Columbus Grove American Legion, 512 Plum Street.

The fish with the $1,000 tag has been made possible by the J. Earl Belch Charitable Trust.

The cost to participate in this year’s event is $10. The derby will be held 1 to 5 p.m.

Prior to the derby the American Legion is hosting a chicken barbecue with serving from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Legion member Nick Gilgenbauch said food will be available all day during the derby.

“We will also have a fish fry at 5 p.m.,” he said adding there will be over $20,000 of cash and prizes given out during the day.

No fishing license is required to take part in this derby and all ages are welcome to participate.

A taxidermist will be at work during the event. There will also be raffle drawings

Proceeds from the event go towards supporting Columbus Grove American Legion and everything they support.

“Every year we have over 500 people attend,” Gilgenbauch said.
