OTTAWA - An automobile accident on Friday that left two Putnam County women dead has further resulted in the resignation of a member of Ottawa’s village council.

According to reports released by the Ohio State Highway Patrol, Alan J. Ducey, while travelling northbound on State Route 65 near the intersection of Road 9-K, crossed left of center, striking a vehicle driven by Christine A. Hayden of Columbus Grove. Hayden’s vehicle was secondarily struck from behind by Asa J. Mortimer, Columbus Grove. Subsequent to the accident, both Hayden and her passenger, Joan M. Beam, also of Columbus Grove, were pronounced dead at Ottawa Ambulatory Care Center and St. Rita’s Medical Center, respectively.

In an email to Anne Coburn-Griffis, managing editor of the Putnam County Sentinel, Jeff Ducey said, “Due to this, I have sent my resignation to Joe Schroeder effective immediately. Thank you for your understanding.”

Schroeder, the village’s solicitor, was unable to confirm receipt of the resignation as of 4:30 p.m. Saturday.

John T. Williams, administrator for the Village of Ottawa, said, “This is a tragedy. We can’t even begin to imagine how these families are feeling. Our hearts and our prayers go out to them.”
