OTTAWA — A student at Sts. Peter and Paul School has been chosen to receive the December Putnam County Optimist Character award.

Griffin Becket, was nominated by SPPS Kindergarten teacher Jodi Stechschulte, to receive the award.

Stechschulte said as a “buddy” to one of her kindergarten student, Griffin exhibits patience and compassion when helping this student.

“Griffin is a positive roll model for him,” Stechschulte states. “He shares Christian values through example and continually guides his behavior when attending mass.”

Stechschulte said the kindergarten teacher looks up to Griffin, responds well to his guidance and enjoys being with him.

“Griffin’s presence seems to provide a calmness for the kindgergartners,” Stechschulte said. “Griffin is concerned with helping the student rather than worrying about what his friends are doing or saying.”

The kindergarten teachers said Griffin offers his help unselfishly and does it with a smile. He offer help even before she, the teacher, asks him to help.

Stechschulte said over the last several years there have been many “buddies” who have helped with the kindergarten students.

“Griffin stands out above the others for his true compassion for helping a challenging child,” she said.

Griffin is the son of Erin and Jason Beckett.
